We ask you first to remember that not everyone with out of state plates, are a danger. 

  • They may have a rental car because their car is in the shop. 
  • They may be an essential worker who previously used public transportation and now must drive
  • They may be health care workers who have been brought in to assist the hospitals

Questions to think about:

  • Have they been following proper self quarantine steps by staying in their yard?–Do nothing
  • Are they having gatherings with people who do not reside in the home?- contact the Police Department with your concern and let them handle it.

With the closure of the BMV, the office of Governor Janet Mills has suspended motor vehicle registration requirements for all MV registrations, ATV’s, Boats, and Trailers.  This order will expire 30 days after the end of the emergency period. 

MV Registration renewals and MV excise tax – the current sticker on your vehicle is valid until 30 days after the end of the emergency period.

Trucks with a temporary registration plate – Trucks with temporary registration plates are allowed to carry a load until 30 days after the emergency period ends and this document should be kept in the truck at all times.

New vehicle registrations through a dealership or private sale – the temporary plate provided by the dealer will expire 30 days after the end of the emergency period. However, if the sale does not include a temporary registration plate this document will serve as a temporary registration and should be kept in the vehicle until 30 days after the emergency period ends or when you can register normally through Town Hall or BMV.

Annual Taxes:  July 1st through June 30th (Fiscal Year)

Real Estate: 1st half payment due September; covers July 1 through December 31

                      2nd half payment due March; covers January 1 through June 30

Personal Property: Total payment due September

If payment is not made before June 30.

You will still receive the current tax bill in August and will be responsible to forward the tax bill to the new owner; due to the new owner will “NOT” receive a tax bill at “ANY POINT” during that tax year.

Unfortunately due to Maine State Law, Municipal Tax Liens are filed in the names as they were assessed on April 1st.

No, you will have to visit Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

If you are moving from one town to another within Maine, you have 10 days to change your address on your registration and or license.

If you are coming from out-of-state to Maine, you have 30 days to change your registration and or license.

Necessary documents are required to show proof of address. For example: Utility Bills, Lease Agreement, License, Insurance Policy, etc;

Only within one month is allowed.
