Banks

Setting up a bank account during your stay in the U.S. is the safest and best way to protect your money. When you open a bank account (and if you plan to receive a debit card), some banks will need you to bring your Social Security number with you to the bank. You should also bring your passport, J-1 visa and DS-2019 forms. A bank employee will help you fill out an application. Once your bank account is set up, you can either bring your work checks to the bank to be deposited or you can ask your employer about having your checks directly deposited into your account through recurring electronic deposits. Good banking habits include depositing your checks into your bank account regularly.

Keep your money safe and never carry large amounts of cash with you!
