Address Assignment & Maintenance

The Assessing Office is also the E911 Addressing Agent for Old Orchard Beach and is responsible for assigning and managing all physical addresses within our town. Unlike standard mailing addresses, Enhanced 911 (E911) addresses are tied to precise geographic coordinates. This ensures that police, fire, and medical personnel can locate you instantly in an emergency.

Accurate addressing saves lives. When you call 911, your physical address flashes on the dispatcher’s screen. If your address is incorrect, unassigned, or poorly marked, emergency responders may lose critical time trying to find you.

What We Do

  • New Address Assignment: Issue official physical addresses for new home construction, commercial buildings, subdivisions, and mobile home parks.
  • Map-Block-Lot Assignments: Assign tax map identifiers for newly created lots in a subdivision or units in a condominium.
  • Road Naming & Approvals: Review and approve new road names to prevent duplicates or sound-alike names that could confuse dispatchers.
  • Mapping Maintenance: Update the town’s digital maps, GIS layers, and the Master Street Address Guide (MSAG) so emergency navigation systems stay accurate.
  • Reviewing Road Ownership: Maintain records regarding private ways, public roads, and paper streets.

Contact us if you are:

  • Building a new structure and need a physical address for building permits and utility hookups.
  • Developing land or splitting a parcel into a subdivision.
  • Naming or renaming a private road that serves multiple homes.

To help emergency responders find you quickly, please ensure your house numbers are:

  • Clearly visible from the road day or night.
  • Posted at the driveway entrance if your house is more than 50 feet from the main road.
  • Made of reflective material contrasting sharply with their background.
